Vampire Academy

What’s better than reading an old favorite book series? Reading that series with an old friend. When I was in middle school and high school my friends and I loved the Vampire Academy series. Recently one of those friends and I decided to read the series together again.

The Vampire Academy series was written by Richelle Mead. There are six books in the series and the first is called Vampire Academy. The first book is about Rose and Lissa, two of the main characters, returning to school after running away. I always liked the first book because it introduces many different characters that grow with each book. I also enjoyed this book because it explains the different types of characters. The three types of characters are Moroi, Guardians, and Stigoi. Mead really does an excellent jobs setting up the structure of this fictional world.

In 2014 there was a movie released based off of the book. I was not a fan of the movie because it did not do the book justice, but of course the book is always better than the movie.

I am excited to read the series again and spend time talking about it with a friend. I hope that I will find more reasons to love the series. If you like vampires books that are different from most I would recommend the Vampire Academy series!

You

Along with reading I also enjoy watching television. Recently I finished watching the Netflix original, You. As I was watching the second season I noticed that it said based on a book. I looked for the book at multiple different stores and after a week of searching I finally found it. The first book is called You by Caroline Kepnes. There is a second book called Hidden Bodies.

You is about Joe Goldberg meeting Guinevere Beck. Joe becomes obsessed with Beck and begins stalking her. I wasn’t sure if the book would similar or different than the show. So far the book is very similar to the show, but of course there are a few differences. I also believe the book is better than the show.

My favorite part of the book so far happens in chapter ten. In chapter ten Joe is upset because he is suppose to be meeting Beck, but Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep was released and the bookstore is packed. I myself am a huge Stephen King fan. In fact I was one of the people who buy his books when they first come out. Throughout the book Kepnes makes many references to Stephen King. She also makes references to many other authors and books, which I think is a nice way of showing how important books, are to Joe. In fact books are so important to Joe that he makes Benji take a test inside the cage.

I have not finished the book yet, but so far I am really enjoying it. The book is just as creepier than the show, maybe even creepier. I am very excited to see if the ending of the book is the same of the show or different. I am also very excited to if the second book is similar to the second season.

If you are a fan of the show I would recommend this book. If you haven’t seen the show I would still recommend this book.

The Phantom Prince

Over the weekend I was at target and found The Phantom Prince by Elizabeth Kendall. The Phantom Prince is about Kendall’s relationship with Ted Bundy. I have seen a few different documentaries about Bundy, but this book is different than the films. The documentaries all focus on the facts of Bundy’s crimes, this book is Kendall’s first hand experiences. As I read the book I forget that it’s more than a book, it’s someone’s life. I can’t imagine what Elizabeth Kendall has been through, but I believe she is incredibly strong for putting the book out into the world. The book is very emotional and personal. At the end of the book is something Molly Kendall, Elizabeth’s daughter, wrote about her experiences with Bundy. If you enjoy true crime books I would highly recommend this book.

Coraline

For my birthday my sister bought me Coraline by Neil Gaiman. I’ve loved the movie since I was younger, but I had never read the book. I was very excited to start reading it. I did not take me long to see the difference between the book and the movie. In the book there is no doll and no Wybie. In the movie the door is very tiny but in the book it is just a regular door. I am halfway through the book and I’m loving it! I don’t mind that it is different, the story is still just as good! In the movie her parents are trapped in a snow globe, but so far that doesn’t seem to be the case for the book. I’m excited to see where her parents are! I’m excited to see more differences and find out what happens! If you are a fan of Coraline the movie I would highly recommend this book! If you have never seen the movie I would recommend reading the book and then watching the movie!

The Strange Fascinations of Noah Hypnotik

Today I started reading The Strange Fascinations of Noah Hypnotik by David Arnold. This book is about a teenage boy whose world changes in weird ways over night. I bought the book because the cover has a lightening bolt similar to the lightening bolt on David Bowie’s Aladdin Sane album. In the description on the back cover Noah is described as being a “Bowie believer”. As a David Bowie fan I am very interested to see how he plays a role in this book. I really enjoy the idea of music being a major theme of a book, but from a fan perspective. I am only a few chapters into the book right now, but I am really enjoying it. From the very beginning it is clear that Noah is an interesting and unique character. I’ve never read anything by David Arnold before, but after this book I might look into his other books.

The End Of Oz

I am just a few chapters away from finishing The End Of Oz. The End Of Oz is the fourth book in Danielle Paige’s Dorothy Must Die series. I believe this book may be the last book of the series. I do not want to give away any spoilers about the book since it is a part of a series.

One thing I can say about this book is it has a few new characters that are great. One new character is Lang. Lang is a princess of Ev. I really like Lang because she is very different than other characters. She uses her magic to hide her true face so that no one in Ev know what she really looks like. Lang is a character that helps to move the story along and thicken the plot.

If you haven’t read the Dorothy Must Die series yet I highly recommend it. These books are a twist on the classic story everyone knows. I’m excited to see how the story ends and what happens to Oz in the end.

The You I’ve Never Known

I just started reading The You I’ve Never Known by Ellen Hopkins. This book is about two young girls with separate lives, but very similar stories. I really enjoy reading Hopkins’s book because of the poetry format. In this book Ariel’s story is told in Hopkins’s typically poetry format and Maya’s story is told in paragraph form.  I think that writing each point of view in a different format helps the reader know which girl is talking and narrating each part. So far this book deals with love, parents, family, friends, pain, and many other topics. I am really enjoying this book and I can’t wait to see how the story unfolds as I continue reading. If you’ve read any other Ellen Hopkins books I think that you would enjoy this one. If you’ve never read a book by Ellen Hopkins you should still check this book out!

The Green Mile

I am currently reading The Green Mile by Stephen King. This book is about a prison where the main characters work with prisoners who are awaiting their execution. This book not only talks about the prisoners on the green mile, but also the guards on the mile. I am halfway through the book and I am really enjoying it! I really like how the narration goes back in fourth between Paul at the nursing home and Paul at the prison. When this book was originally released it was released in six small separate books. Readers would have to wait months between each book. It was later released as one complete book. I am reading it in the way it originally came, six small separate books. Whenever I finish one book I can’t wait to get home and start the next little book! If you enjoy reading Stephen King I would highly recommend reading The Green Mile!

Dolores Claiborne

Today, August 21 2017, is the day of the solar eclipse so I have started reading Dolores Claiborne by Stephen King. I am not one hundred percent sure what role the eclipse plays in this book, but I know there is one! I am also not positive what this book is about, but it is a Stephen King book so I am sure I will love it. The things I do know about this book is that there is a well, an eclipse, and Dolores Claiborne.
